Garmin GPSMAP® 700 series Review
Overview
Discover the new Garmin GPSMAP® 700 series chartplotters. With their extra-wide panoramic displays, these affordable new systems bring fully menu-driven touchscreen control and radar interface to a compact standalone chartplotter format. All at a great value price that’s easy to justify for any boat or budget. Ideal for small to mid-sized vessels, the GPSMAP® 700 is a standalone device that does not offer support for the Garmin Marine Network.
Designed to Shine
Featuring a sleek 7-inch WVGA color displays and built-in high-sensitivity GPS receivers, Garmin’s robust new 700 series plotters offer unprecedented extremes of brightness for daytime readability with super low-level dimming for optimum night vision.
Flexible Configurations
The GPSMAP 700 series offers full NMEA 2000 connectivity for engine, fuel, wind, autopilot and other data monitoring. Plus, a standard radar port lets you connect with any Garmin GMR series marine radar for target scanning on your chartplotter. As an added safety option, XM WX™ Satellite Weather for U.S. waters can be accessed via a GXM™ 51 antenna/receiver (sold separately). And you can also use the GXM receiver to enjoy over 170 channels of digital-quality XM Radio entertainment while you’re cruising or relaxing in port (additional XM service fee required).
Capture the Wind
The GPSMAP 700 series chartplotters are the first touchscreen chartplotters from Garmin to offer a full complement of sailing-specific wind gauges. These digital gauges are customizable and stunning to view in brilliant color. In addition, the gauges can act as the only source of wind data or work in conjunction with existing gauges. And for easy installation, the information is brought in via NMEA 0183 or NMEA 2000 connectivity.
Navigate with Confidence
Both the GPSMAP 720 and 740 models come with a built-in digital elevation model (DEM) worldwide basemap, which can easily be upgraded with optional BlueChart® g2 or g2 Vision® cards for expanded coverage of specific regions. In addition to its digital basemap, the Garmin GPSMAP 740 model also comes preloaded with detailed offshore maps for all U.S. coastal areas, including Alaska and Hawaii, plus the Bahamas. And by simply plugging in an optional BlueChart g2 Vision card (sold separately), you can upgrade to such premium features as high-resolution satellite imagery, Auto Guidance, aerial reference photos, and true 3D visual map perspective — with both MarinerEye and FishEye views.
Bring Radar Aboard
Each unit in the GPSMAP 700 series features a built-in radar port that can be interfaced with Garmin’s line of GMR™ marine radar systems. Whether you’re adding radar now or in the future, you’ll enjoy the convenience of ‘plug-and-play installation’ as well as the power, range and high-definition targeting of our proven radar offerings.
Add Sonar Functionality
If you want to add underwater digital sonar scanning capability, Garmin also offers the GPSMAP 720s and 740s combo models — which feature a built-in 1-kilowatt capable sonar transceiver that can clearly define fish targets and terrain features as far down as 2,000 feet (with a dual frequency transducer) to keep you apprised of what’s happening below the waves.
